Living sober may be the greatest gift you can give to yourself or someone close to you. Though it may not be easy for a person diagnosed with alcohol use disorder or substance use disorder, there are steps that can be taken, and through those, it is possible to break free from the chains of addiction.
If you or a loved on has a dependency issue, it is best to call upon someone who knows the logistics and knowledge of what to do. Most often, someone with alcohol or substance use disorder needs an Intervention in order to knock down the wall of denial. More than likely, a medical detox is need as well. Before the Intervention, the Interventionist will meet with family, friends and loved ones to get a clear understanding of the individual and will suggest the most effective strategy for the Intervention as well as the best type of treatment for the individual. The process then begins, with a plan in motion to keep to keep the individual on track and engaged within the Intervention or denial will set in again.
Traditional philosophy states that self-control is need to stay clean and sober. Living sober is not a control issue, someone active in their alcohol use or substance use crosses a line into addiction and cannot themselves "go back" to control it. Indefinite assistance is needed, and then living sober is attainable.
