Like most overdose victims, Houston had a long history of addiction. She had tried rehab at least a few times, remaining clean and sober for periods of time. Like her, the majority of overdose victims have typically attempted rehab previously. Footprint of Serenity specializes with after treatment care.

It is very important what an addict or alcoholic does upon leaving treatment. Although they feel safe and seem to be okay, they usually return to their addiction. They do to not know how to use the tools that they were given during their stay in Rehab. That is where our Sober Companions come in, we teach each individual how to get involved in their lives, recovery, and how to manage the triggers that lie ahead.

Few overdose victims have the talent of Whitney Houston. But while we mourn the loss of a legend that had great difficulty achieving recovery, we should consider how to prevent similar deaths in the future. It is important to educate people who are at particular risk of overdose (people using and abusing drugs and/or alcohol and others such as those leaving treatment or prison) about the tolerance effect, the danger of mixing sedatives, and the existence of narcan, also known as naloxone if relevant. Making narcan available over-the-counter could also make a real difference in reducing death rates.
